Cat Dreams - A Kentucky-quality Stallion Standing in California

Legendary Thoroughbred owner and breeder Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney is oft' quoted.  "Breed the best to the best and hope for the best."

This axiom of the American turf was never more evident with the mating of the great stallion Storm Cat to the fast and consistent multiple stakes winner J J's Dream, resulting in California's hottest new stallion, Cat Dreams.

A Grade 1 winner on the racetrack, Storm Cat ranks among the world's leading stallions. The sire of over 120 stakes winners and the earners of over 85 million dollars, now commands a stud fee of half-a-million dollars - the highest in the United States. He has also proven himself a sire-of-sires, with sons Giant's Causeway, Hennessey, Forest Wildcat, Tabasco Cat, Tale of the Cat, Storm Boot and Forestry and many others on or near the top of the breeding charts virtually every year since they began their stud careers.

J J's Dream, the dam of Cat Dreams was a $1.6 million broodmare purchase at the 1999 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale. The daughter of Glitterman won 13 races and over a million dollars in her illustrious career, winning 10 stakes - six of them graded - including the Barbara Fritchie, the Genuine Risk, the Azalea, the Safely Kept and the Cicada. From the family of Preakness winner Louis Quatorze, J J's Dream set a new track record for six furlongs at Lone Star Park, stopping the clock in 1:08 and 4/5 seconds.

Purchased at the 2002 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by billionaire B. Wayne Hughes, who campaigned 2003 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and two-year-old champion Action This Day, Cat Dreams joins a roster of top stallions from the Hughes program, including the biggest rising star among Kentucky stallions, Malibu Moon, sire of Hollywood Juvenile (G1)winner Perfect Moon and Del Mar Futurity (G1) winner Declan's Moon.

"I have been wanting to stand a stallion in California," says Hughes. "But I was waiting for the right one. I know Cat Dreams has it all. I believe in him so much, that one of the mares I am supporting him with is a half-sister to Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos."

Hughes sent several others of his best broodmares to the court of Cat Dreams including, graded-placed Ma Guerre, a half-sister to Louisiana Derby winner Mighty, My Name Is Sue, a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Starry Ice, Touch Upon, a half-sister to Grade 3 winner and half-million dollar earner Disco Rico and San Diego Sue, a half-sister to two stakes winners.

Hughes confidence was justified, as California breeders made Cat Dreams the leading freshman sire by mares bred in the Golden State in 2005.

With both Storm Cat and J J's Dream winners at two, Cat Dreams boasts the win-early pedigree that California breeders desire. Following in the footsteps of his sire and dam, Cat Dreams was an impressive winner at Churchill Downs in his racing debut at two, despite suffering a career ending injury during the running.

When B. Wayne Hughes approached Bongo Racing Stable to partner with him and manage the stud career of Cat Dreams, it was not only the horse's top-class pedigree and impressive performance on the racetrack that made his offer so attractive. It was Hughes' commitment to the project that made it so exciting.

This is a rare opportunity for California breeders to have a Kentucky-quality stallion in their own backyard. After two ultra-succesful years at stud at Pepper Oaks Farm, Cat Dreams will stand at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez during 2007 for a fee of $4,000.
